Eriez PolyMag Metal & X-Ray Detectable Plastic Additives to Catch Foreign Materials in Food Products

Eriez PolyMag® Additives impart metal detectability, x-ray contrast, and magnetic susceptibility into plastic moldings used by food processors to prevent plastic foreign material (FM) contaminates from reaching the consumer.

Molders of products used by agricultural and food processors can satisfy varying levels of detectability at a cost substantially less than specialty compounds. This eliminates the need to buy larger minimum quantities of special resins and carry excess material inventory.

Major food brand owners, retailers and restaurant chains insist that food processors utilize plastic and rubber articles that are Metal and X-Ray Detectable. This has become part of many company's HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) programs.

More recently, the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) requires Agricultural Producers, Food Processors & Packers implement Hazard Analysis & Risk-Based Preventative Controls (HARPC) to prevent physical contaminates like glass, metal, wood, plastic and rubber from entering the market. The FDA considers physical contaminates greater than .275” (7mm) in length to present a hazard. Growers, packers & food processors are using their existing metal detectors and x-ray inspection systems with detectable plastics to prevent plastic contaminated foods from reaching consumers.

About PolyMag Additives

Eriez' EU and FDA-compliant PolyMag® Additives impart Metal Detectability, X-Ray Contrast and Magnetic Separation into a range of polymers. We supply these masterbatch additives to molders of bucket elevators, conveyor belting, gaskets, hearing protection, O-rings, pens & markers, plastic pallets, returnable plastic containers, scoops & scrapers, zip ties, and much more.

PolyMag Additives are typically included at 5% to 25% loadings in moldings and extrusions. Resins containing the PolyMag® Additives Gray HSCP can be pigmented darker colors like blue, gray, green, red, and purple.PolyMag® Beige XRD is preferred for plastic and rubber applications that require a high level of x-ray contrast. Molders can include both the PolyMag® HSCP and XRD masterbatch additives to impart Metal Detectability and an even higher level of X-Ray contrast in plastic & rubber parts.

Independent laboratory testing and the FDA have offered favorable opinions for food contact compliance of our PolyMag Additives.

We can also provide PolyMag® powders for special compounding needs or for use in foam, silicone, thermoset rubber, and cast urethane materials.

As a leading manufacturer of Magnetic Separators and Metal Detection systems, Eriez can assist you with the level of detectability required by different food processing applications and we can provide an analysis of your product’s inspection signature.

White Papers

Metal Detectable Plastic Application Considerations

Eriez PolyMag Additives impart Metal Detectability into plastic moldings to prevent plastic contaminated products. These white papers explain actions by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the basics of how metal detection and X-Ray inspection works.

X-Ray Detectable Plastic Application Considerations

Typically plastics are not Metal or X-Ray Detectable; however Eriez offers several PolyMag® masterbatch additives to impart X-Ray visibility, Metal Detectability and Magnetic Susceptibility into plastic products.
